BEAUMONT, Texas — The Beaumont Oil Barons are the new semi-pro baseball team coming to Southeast Texas, officials announced Tuesday during a press conference at the Spindletop Gladys-City Boomtown Museum.
The team is part of an independent professional league and has been in development since last year, with Lamar University spearheading the effort to establish semi-pro baseball in the region.
The Oil Barons will provide local access to professional baseball without requiring long-distance travel, according to general manager Mike Marek.
“You don’t have to drive, you know, long distances to get, go to a sporting event, you know, obviously there’s great baseball here, there’s great baseball here at Lamar, but we want to be an extension to that during the summer,” Marek said.
The team will compete against other cities in the independent league, including Abilene, Texarkana and Joplin, Missouri. Home games will be played at Lamar University’s Vincent Beck Stadium.
Response to the team has been positive since the initial announcement in May, with many fans expressing excitement about having a local team, Marek told 12News.
