A quote from the article:

The Mid-America League will field a team in Abilene for its inaugural season this spring.

The yet unnamed Abilene team will play at McMurry’s Walt Driggers Field, following in the footsteps of the city’s last professional baseball team — the Prairie Dogs, who played one season (2012) in the defunct North American League.

Scott Kirk, the team’s president, said fans can vote for the Abilene team’s nickname and mascot.

“We look forward to our fans stepping to the plate and picking a name for the team that epitomizes the spirit of the city,” Kirk said in a news release.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mid America League Announces Abilene, Texas, as the Second Franchise in League

The Mid America League, a premier summer development baseball league, is thrilled to announce the selection of Abilene, Texas, as the home of its second franchise in the League.  Abilene joins Sherman, Texas as an inaugural member of the Mid America League.

Matt Perry, President of the Mid America League, said, “Abilene has a great history of minor league baseball dating back to the 1920’s when the Abilene Eagles played in the West Texas League.  The city’s rich baseball history and commitment to sports, along with its enthusiastic fan base, make it an ideal location for one of our inaugural franchises.  We think the timing is great as well, as there are so many positive things happening in Abilene.”

Mid America League teams will play 68 home games from late May through early August followed by playoffs to determine a League champion.  Teams will be comprised of college players with team’s maintaining the ability to add select, non-college players.  Further, the League will institute a Name, Image and Likeness program for players to earn income for approved services while playing in Abilene.   Players will stay with host families in the local market during the season.

The Abilene team will play its home games at McMurry University’s Driggers Field, which was the home of a minor league team in 2012.   Perry added, “We’re really appreciative of the University playing such a vital role in bringing baseball back to the market after such a long absence.  We look forward to working with them to create a great working partnership and know that Driggers Field will be a great host for home games.”

The League is in the process of finalizing the team’s ownership group, which will include local investors.  An announcement in the near future will confirm the final ownership structure, to include a “meet and greet” opportunity with owners and League representatives, details of a “Name The Team” contest, season tickets and more.

New Mid America League Team Coming To Sherman

Last week KXII in Sherman Texas reported that the Mid America League will be bringing a new baseball team to the Sherman / Grayson County region. The team will play its home games at Veterans Field at Fairview Park.

This is from the KXII.com news article:

Baseball lovers, get excited! Sherman will be home to a Mid-America league baseball team.

“There’ll be a lot of announcements about the season tickets and the name the team contests that we’ll have in the community and involve the community in that process,” Mid-America League Co-founder, Matt Perry shared.

In September, Sherman City Council approved future sales of alcohol at the Veterans Field during minor league baseball games, that’s one item checked off the to-do list.

“So, a lot of this stuff will start taking form in the very near future, including naming of a coach, and then we’ll start putting the roster together for the team in the months ahead as well,” Perry continued.

Once the community picks a team name that’s just right, a 68-game schedule will be made that will start in May of 2024 and run into the first week of August.

“We’ll work on the scheduling, and we’ll have a balanced schedule amongst the initial six teams and lay that out so that each team has a similar number of weekend dates,” he stated.

Choosing Veterans Field at Fairview Park for the team to call home, was an easy pick.

“Sherman was definitely one that was on the docket and really liked the market and, you know, here it’s worked out,” Perry said.

Start brainstorming, the league will announce how to submit team name ideas this month!

Before you know it, fans will be looking forward to an action-packed season as the new team takes to the field.
